Our Story

Our Story

A memory from the future. Traces of Sheryl Crow, Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Cowboy Junkies, Tom Petty, Patti Smith, Fleetwood Mac, Oasis with a bit of the ethereal Radiohead sprinkled in. And yet, entirely new.

A merging of roots and future. You’ll feel a recognition in the sound, as if it’s always been here.  As you drive with the beat - You KNOW It, and yet, it’s different this time. Mystic mama SriMati’s vocals create a soothing magic carpet ride into a reborn nostalgia - the lyrics as codes, carrying you back to where you have always been.

You’ll feel your belonging, the origins of your heart and soul.

Julie comes from musical DNA. Her uncle played with the Glen Miller Band, as trumpeter and as pianist. While her brother, Stuart Mathis played guitar in the Wallflowers and toured with Lucinda Williams for decades. With music in her bones, she nurtured her own sons and they played music together throughout their childhoods.

Julie’s roots are in the South. Her grandfather was from Clarksville, TN and her father was born in Texas and mapped the jungles of South America as a young man where he met her Chilean mother.

“Manger” was named on a highway in Tennessee - it came in the form of a whisper as she traveled between Memphis and Nashville. The name resonated with Julie’s pursuit of the sacred and provided the container in which to write, record and perform the music of her destiny.

Tyler and Trapper, musical brothers with their own first release coming later this year for their band Storm Department, (think Radiohead, My bloody Valentine)  join her on guitar, drums and vocals - just as they always have over many, many years.

Manger’s debut album was produced by Eric Jackowitz of Wolves of Glendale.
